How Much Do You Need to Earn to Afford a Changan in Jamaica?

Changan is on Old Hope Road, and the cheapest one is JMD $3,150,000. That is a new floor for this series by JMD $549,000. I ran the salary numbers on the April 2026 scales, and the median Jamaican salary on this site clears three of the eight cars on the lot.

There is a sign at 74-76 Old Hope Road that says Changan, and under it a slogan: "Touch Di Road". It's their way of welcoming you to a Jamaican showroom. 'Touch Di Road' is a clever way of saying 'Drive Out', in a brand new Changan馃槈. Chinese cars are all the rage in Jamaica right now. You can't drive too far without seeing one.

Today, I'll answer whether you can actually afford one. This is the third article in this series. The first was

Jetour, the second was Dongfeng, and the Dongfeng one set the rules I am keeping. The ceiling is 20% of gross

monthly pay. The loan term is 10 years, which is what Jamaican dealers and banks are actually writing. And every salary here is the newest I hold. Prices were read off changanjamaica.com on October 27, 2026. Salaries are from our own database on the same day. Every salary is a year's pay, before tax, and the year it was reported is in brackets right after it.

Note Well: Changan Jamaica does not publish a monthly payment on the website. So every monthly figure on this page is my own model, not the dealer's offer. Also, every price on that website is a "Starting at" price. That phrase is doing more work than it looks like. It means the figure is the floor for the base trim, and nothing on the page says whether duties, GCT, or registration are included. Dongfeng printed "drive-out" on some models and "includes duties and GCT" on others, so you knew what you were looking at. Here you do not. Ask the sales rep for details.

The 20% Rule

Same rule as last time, and it is worth restating because this is the article where it bites hardest. Your monthly car payment should not be more than 20% of your gross monthly pay. Gross means before any deductions. 30% is too high for Jamaica. Look at a Jamaican payslip, and you will see why. Off the top comes PAYE, NIS, NHT, and education tax. What lands in the account is well under the gross. Then the car starts asking: insurance, licensing, fitness, fuel, and a set of tyres after a bad pothole or two, or three, or five...you get the point馃槹. At 30% there is nothing left for the car's own running costs, never mind kids, emergencies, and hurricanes named Melissa馃槓.

Calculation: monthly payment x 12, divided by 0.2. Or quicker, because 12 divided by 0.2 is 60: multiply the monthly payment by 60. A JMD $37,800 payment needs JMD $2,268,000 a year. Run it the other way for yourself. Take your annual salary and divide by 60. That is your ceiling.

What Does Each Changan Actually Cost?

Changan publishes a cash price and stops. No monthly, no term, no rate. So here is the model I built, and I would rather you argue with it than not see it.

Model: Nothing down. 120 months, which is 10 years. 7.75% a year on the reducing balance. A reducing balance loan is one where interest is charged on what you still owe, so it falls a little every month, as the balance comes down. Nothing down is deliberate. The figures below finance the full sticker price, because the payslip you have this month is the only thing you can check these numbers against.

Put money down and every monthly payment here falls. None of them rises. Where did 7.75% come from? Not out of the air. Jetour Jamaica publishes both a price and a monthly payment on its own website, and I worked backwards from their figures to find the rate hiding inside them. It came out at about 7.75%. It is a real rate, charged by a real Jamaican car dealer. This is the same one the Dongfeng article used, so these eight cars can be compared with those eight.

Here is the catch in plain figures. The Changan Alsvin at JMD $3,150,000 costs you about JMD $4,536,000 by the time the last payment clears. Roughly JMD $1,386,000 of that is interest. The Deepal G318 at JMD $10,500,000 costs about JMD $15,120,000. Ten years is also longer than most people keep a car. Sell at year five, and you still owe, and what you owe may be more than the car is worth.

Note Well: a bank's motor vehicle loan is usually dearer than a franchise dealer's own financing. Treat every monthly figure below as the optimistic end.

Eight models, cheapest first, with the salary each one demands at 20%.

Who Can Buy The Cheapest One?

The Alsvin needs JMD $2,268,000 a year, and it is the cheapest new car this series has priced. By a distance.

The Dongfeng Shine GS held the floor at JMD $3,699,000. The Alsvin undercuts it by JMD $549,000馃く. The cheapest Jetour is JMD $3,990,000, so the Alsvin is JMD $840,000 under that. In salary terms, the gap is JMD $396,000 a year, which is JMD $6,600 a month off your ceiling. For a lot of people, that info helps you to make a decision long before entering the showroom.

So what is the Alsvin? A 1.5 litre sedan, 105 hp, 5 speed dual-clutch gearbox, about 6.8 litres per 100 km. A 7-inch touchscreen and leather seats. It is not exciting, and it is not pretending to be. It is the cheapest brand-new car with a franchise warranty that I have been able to put in one of these tables. The median Jamaican salary on this site clears it easily. Across every role, our median is JMD $3,959,299. 20% of that, monthly, is JMD $65,988, against a JMD $37,800 payment. That is JMD $28,188 a month of daylight. The middle of our Jamaican data can buy this car with nothing down and still have the insurance, the fitness, and the tyres covered.

Now the 2026 government scale, because this is the first car in the series where the answer is mostly yes. 118 of the 153 grades clear the Alsvin at their bottom notch. A band means your pay depends on how far up it you have climbed, and the scale calls each step a notch. The bottom notch is day one in the grade. So for roughly 3 quarters of the central government scale, this car is affordable from the day you are hired.

Read that back, because it has not been true in this series before. And then, the 16 grades that can't afford this car. 16 of the 153 cannot reach the Alsvin at the top notch of their band, after a whole career in the grade.

Here is one, and it is not government. Clean Moves Co advertised a Live-in Housekeeper at JMD $100,000 a month, which is JMD $1,200,000 a year (2026). 20% of that is JMD $20,000 a month. The cheapest new car in this article is JMD $37,800.

That is JMD $17,800 a month short, on a ten-year loan, with nothing left to stretch. There is no model on this page for them, and there was none on the Dongfeng page either.

Changan Christmas Sale

One Band, Two Answers

Stay with the Rural Agricultural Development Authority for a second, because it advertised a post in 2026 that lands on both sides of the Alsvin at once. RADA advertised a Public Procurement Administrator from JMD $1,711,060 to JMD $2,301,186 (2026). Hired at the bottom notch, 20% of monthly pay is

JMD $28,518, and they are JMD $9,282 a month short of the cheapest car in this article. At the top of the same band it is JMD $38,353, and they clear it by JMD $553 a month. Five hundred and fifty-three dollars. Same post, same authority, same car park.

One of them drives a new Alsvin, and one of them does not, and the only difference is how long they have been doing the job. The Authority put a Senior Secretary on exactly that band too, and the National Fisheries Authority put an Aquaculture Technician on it (JMD $1,711,060 to JMD $2,301,185, 2026). Three different jobs, same two answers.

One step down and it closes. The Ministry of Energy, Transport and Telecommunications advertised a Human Resource Development Officer at JMD $2,190,302 (2026). 20% of that is JMD $36,505 a month. They are JMD $1,295 a month short of the Alsvin. One thousand two hundred and ninety-five dollars, at a ministry, on the cheapest new car on the island with a warranty. About JMD $108,000 as a down payment closes it, and the car is theirs.

Who Can Buy The CS35 Plus?

The CS35 Plus needs JMD $3,162,000, which is JMD $52,700 a month. It is the second cheapest, a 1.4 litre turbo SUV with 160 hp, a 10 inch screen, adaptive cruise, and Apple CarPlay. On paper it is the value pick of the range.

The CS35 Plus is left-hand drive. I checked it at the Changang Showroom. We drive on the left in Jamaica. Read the steering wheel section near the bottom of this article before you fall in love with it, because this is the car in the range where that decision actually costs you something.

Who clears it? The Ministry of Energy, Transport and Telecommunications advertised a Senior Public Procurement Officer at JMD $3,501,526 (2026). 20% of that, monthly, is JMD $58,359, so they clear the CS35 Plus by JMD $5,659 a month.

The National Fisheries Authority put three posts on that same floor: Capture Fisheries Extension Officer, Aquaculture Officer, and Systems Administrator, each on a band from JMD $3,501,526 to JMD $4,709,163 (2026). At the top of that, band 20% monthly is JMD $78,486, and this car stops being a question.

Who misses it? The Ministry's Human Resource Officer, Staffing, at JMD $2,803,771 (2026), and its Human Resource Officer, Organizational Development, on the same figure. 20% of that is JMD $46,730 a month, which is JMD $5,970 short. They are on the Alsvin comfortably, and not on this.

Who Can Buy The Uni S?

The Uni S needs JMD $3,600,000, or JMD $60,000 a month. It looks expensive: coupe-styled SUV, 1.5 litre turbo making 138 kW and 300 Nm, panoramic sunroof, a 540 degree camera system, ventilated seats. And this is the definitive line of the first half of this article. Take that Senior Public Procurement Officer again, at JMD $3,501,526 (2026). 20% monthly is JMD $58,359. They are JMD $1,641 a month short of the Uni S.

So are all three of those National Fisheries Authority officers at the floor of their band. One thousand six hundred and forty-one dollars a month. About JMD $137,000 down closes the gap(a down payment works wonders). On the government scale, the Uni S arrives at a specific place. The lowest grade whose bottom notch clears it is the band running from JMD $3,676,602 to JMD $4,944,621 (2026), which covers 15 grades including Accountant 1, Auditor 1, Senior Executive Officer 1, and Foreign Service Officer 2. At the bottom notch, 20% monthly is JMD $61,277, clear by JMD $1,277. At the top, it is JMD $82,410. The site median clears it too, by JMD $5,988 a month.

Who Can Buy The CS75 Pro?

Here is the one I did not expect. The CS75 Pro is the 7-seater, a 1.5 litre turbo with a 7-speed dual clutch, a 360 degree camera, and a panoramic roof. It needs JMD $4,320,000, which is JMD $72,000 a month.

Jamaica Post advertised a Manager, Customer Care at JMD $4,266,270 (2026). 20% of that, monthly, is JMD $71,104. They are JMD $896 a month short of the family 7-seater. Eight hundred and ninety-six dollars. A manager at Jamaica Post, missing the only seven-seat car at this dealership by less than the cost of a full tank of gas. The National Fisheries Authority advertised a Manager, Outstation and Special Projects on a band from JMD $4,266,270 to JMD $5,737,659 (2026), and at the floor of it they miss by the same JMD $896. About JMD $75,000 down closes it, which is the clearest case on this page for putting money on the counter.

And the site median misses this one. JMD $65,988 against JMD $72,000 is JMD $6,012 a month short. So the median Jamaican salary on this site buys the Alsvin, the CS35 Plus and the Uni S, and stops. Three of eight.

Who clears it? Those National Fisheries Authority officers at the top of their JMD $4,709,163 band, 20% monthly of JMD $78,486, clear by JMD $6,486. On the government scale, it is the band from JMD $4,479,584, which covers 16 grades including Accountant 2 and Senior Executive Officer 2, clear by JMD $2,660 at the

bottom notch.

Who Can Buy The Hunter?

The Hunter is the work vehicle: 1.9 litre turbo diesel, 150 hp, 350 Nm, 4WD, a 1,000 kg payload and 3,500 kg of towing. 5,330 mm long. It needs JMD $5,034,000, which is JMD $83,900 a month. That is 1.27 times the median salary on this site.

The Ministry of Energy, Transport and Telecommunications advertised a Director of Employee Relations, Health, Safety and Wellbeing at JMD $5,198,035 (2026). 20% of that is JMD $86,634 a month, so they clear the Hunter by JMD $2,734. The National Fisheries Authority put three posts on that same floor: Regional Aquaculture

Extension Officer, Fisheries Management Specialist, and Aquaculture Engineering Specialist, on a band from JMD $5,198,035 to JMD $6,990,779 (2026). At the floor, they are clear by the same JMD $2,734. At the ceiling, 20% monthly is JMD $116,513, and there is real room.

So the honest buyer of a Jamaican work pickup, again, is not a contractor with a yard full of equipment. It is a director or a senior specialist at a government agency, or somebody on the equivalent in the private sector. That was true of the Dongfeng P22, and still true here.

Note Well: the Hunter drinks. 9.8 litres per 100 km, which at JMD $254.68 a litre is about JMD $2,496 per 100 km. The Alsvin is about JMD $1,732. Over ten years of commuting, that gap is its own car payment馃槄.

Are The Deepals Actually Electric?

Read this section before you read the next two, because the website's own labels will mislead you, and I do not think it is deliberate(likely a marketing choice). Changan's electric sub-brand is Deepal, and we listed three of them. The site calls the S05 a "Hybrid SUV", the S07 an "Electric SUV" and the G318 a "Hybrid SUV". Here is what the technical sheets actually say.

The Deepal S07 is a pure electric car. 79.97 kWh ternary lithium battery, 475 km of range, 35 minutes to go from 30% to 80% on a DC fast charger, rear wheel drive, 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds. No engine at all.

The Deepal S05 and the Deepal G318 are not hybrids in the way most people use that word. Both carry a 1,497 cc four cylinder petrol engine listed under "Battery" on the spec sheet, making 70 kW. That is a range extender . A range extender is a petrol engine that does not drive the wheels at all. It only generates electricity to feed the motor when the battery runs low. So you drive an electric car, and you fill it with petrol when you are far from a plug. They are also referred to as REEVs(Range Extended Electric Vehicles).

That is a genuinely useful thing to own in Jamaica, and I want to be fair to it. The charging problem disappears. But know which one you are buying. "Hybrid" and "range extender" are not the same type of car.

The charging warning from the Dongfeng article still stands, with one change. Most of Jamaica's public network uses the American J1772 and CCS1 standards. Chinese cars generally arrive on the European Type 2 and CCS2. Different shape, same electricity. Changan Jamaica's website does not publish a charger count or a

connector standard at all, which Dongfeng's did. So ask two questions at the counter and do not leave without answers. Which connector does it have? And is an adapter in the deal, and for which standard?

Who Can Buy The Deepal S05 Or The S07?

The S05 needs JMD $5,322,000, which is JMD $88,700 a month. The S07 needs JMD $5,754,000, which is JMD $95,900. That Director of Employee Relations at the Ministry, on JMD $5,198,035 (2026), clears the Hunter and then misses the S05 by JMD $2,066 a month. So do the three National Fisheries Authority specialists at the floor of their band. One step up the same band and it is finished: the Manager, Outstation and Special Projects at

the top of their range, JMD $5,737,659 (2026), has JMD $95,628 a month and clears the S05 by JMD $6,928.

And then the line I checked three times. That same officer, at the very top of a band it takes a career to climb, is JMD $272 a month short of the Deepal S07. Two hundred and seventy-two dollars. That is the smallest margin I have printed in this series. It is less than one tank of fuel a year. About JMD $23,000 down closes it, which is a weekend.

On the government scale, the S05 arrives at the band from JMD $5,457,937 (2026), which covers 15 grades including Accountant 3, clear by JMD $2,266 at the bottom notch. The S07 does not arrive until JMD $6,649,966, Accountant 4 and its neighbours. Only 37 of the 153 grades clear the S07 at their bottom notch.

The Flagship: Who Can Buy The Deepal G318?

The G318 is the one on the homepage. A 5,010 mm all-terrain 4x4 range extender making 433 hp and 572 Nm, with hill descent control and a 360 degree camera. At JMD $10,500,000, it is JMD $126,000 a month on my model, and it needs JMD $7,560,000 a year. That is 1.91 times the median salary on this site.

Not one of the 2026 agency job postings I hold clears it. Not the research vessel captain, not the agency directors, none of them. On the central government scale, you have to reach the band from JMD $8,102,338 to JMD $10,896,744 (2026), which covers 11 grades including Foreign Service Officer 6, Legal Officer 4, and Information Technology Officer 8. At the bottom notch, 20% monthly is JMD $135,039, and the G318 finally fits by JMD $9,039. Only 25 of the 153 grades clear it at their bottom notch.

There is exactly one 2026 posting in my whole Jamaican set that buys this car, and it is not in a ministry. Bridgeport High School advertised a Principal from JMD $9,172,508 to JMD $11,741,586 (2026). At the floor of that band, 20% monthly is JMD $152,875, and they clear the flagship by JMD $26,875 a month.

A high school principal is the honest buyer of Changan's flagship in Jamaica. I did not expect to write that sentence either馃榿.

Is The Warranty Actually Better Than The Last One?

This is the third brand in the series, so the comparison is finally worth a table. And this is the section where Changan comes off worst, so I am going to be direct about it.

- Changan: 6 years or 100,000 km on the petrol vehicles. 5 years or 100,000 km on the three Deepals, plus 8 years or 150,000 km on the Deepal battery. 3 years of free servicing or 30,000 km. 2 years of JAA membership for roadside assistance, 1 year of registration, 5 years of fitness, free tint, and a full tank.

- Dongfeng: 7 years or 300,000 km on the vehicle. 10 years with no mileage limit on the powertrain and battery. 3 years of scheduled servicing, 42,000 km.

- Jetour: 8 years and up to 300,000 km on the vehicle. 3 years or 42,500 km of free servicing, plus free registration, fitness, and window tinting.

Look at the kilometres, not the years, because the kilometres are where this is decided. Changan's 100,000 km cap is a third of what the other two give you. Jamaica is a small island, and people assume they will never reach it. A Kingston commuter doing 40 km a day, five days a week, passes 100,000 km in about ten years. Somebody driving Spanish Town to New Kingston and back gets there a lot sooner. On a ten-year loan, that matters: Dongfeng's and Jetour's coverage outlasts the payments on distance, and Changan's may not.

The servicing is the same story. 30,000 km against 42,000 and 42,500. On a Kingston commute you reach 30,000 km in about two years, so "3 years free servicing" is realistically two.

Where Changan wins is the extras nobody else lists. 2 years of JAA membership is a real benefit that costs real money. And the Deepal battery cover, 8 years or 150,000 km, is the one spec where the mileage cap is generous relative to the rest of the sheet.

Note Well: It is still a cap. Dongfeng's powertrain cover has no mileage limit at all, and a battery is the 5 or 6 figure surprise that ends an electric car's life.

So on paper: Jetour first, Dongfeng second, Changan third. Changan's answer is the price, and on the Alsvin that answer is a good one.

Which Side Is The Steering Wheel On?

Do not skip this one. We drive on the left in Jamaica. The Dongfeng article gave you a rule that worked: if the model page does not say right-hand drive, it is not right-hand drive. Dongfeng's website was direct about

it, and said so on the pages where it was true.

That rule does not work here. I read all eight Changan model pages. Not one of them says which side the steering wheel is on. Not for the left-hand drive ones and not for the right-hand drive ones. There is no "left-hand drive shown" caption on the photography either. The information is simply not on the website.

So here is what I know, and it comes from Changan's Instagram and a visit to the showroom, not from the site:

- The CS35 Plus is left-hand drive.

- The CS75 Pro is right-hand drive.

- The Deepal G318 is left-hand drive.

- The Uni S is right-hand drive.

- The Deepal S05 is right-hand drive.

- The Deepal S07 is right-hand drive.

- The Hunter is right-hand drive.

- The Alsvin is right-hand drive. The cheapest new car in this series has the wheel on the correct side, which is worth saying out loud.

Is a left-hand drive car a dealbreaker? No. Plenty of them run here. But you will reach every drive-through, toll booth, and parking ticket machine from the wrong side for the whole life of the car. Overtaking on a two-lane road is harder. And it follows you to resale, because the next buyer asks the same question you are asking

now.

Two of the eight Changans are right-hand drive. Three of the six Jetours were left-hand drive. The Dongfeng Shine GS, Changan CS35 Plus and Deepal G318. This is now the third dealer in a row where it comes up, and it is the single most common thing this series has found that the showrooms do not lead with.

What Should You Actually Do With This?

1. Run your 20% number before you walk in. Gross monthly pay times 0.2 is your ceiling. Or take your annual salary and divide by 60, which gives you the same answer in one step. Write it in your notes app before you go.

2. Ask what "Starting at" includes. Every price on that website carries those two words, and nothing says whether duties, GCT, and registration are inside the figure. Dongfeng printed it. Changan does not. Make them write down the drive-out total.

3. Ask for the term and the rate in writing, because the dealer has published neither. Every monthly figure here is my model with nothing down, at 120 months at 7.75%. The dealer's real offer could be better or worse.

4. Ask for the total you will have paid at the end, and then look at it. Ten years on the Alsvin comes to about JMD $4,536,000 on a JMD $3,150,000 car. If that number makes you uncomfortable, the answer is a shorter term or a cheaper car, not a longer term.

5. If you do have a deposit, know exactly what it buys. Every JMD $100,000 you put down takes about JMD $1,200 off the monthly payment at these terms. That ministry HR officer who missed the Alsvin by JMD $1,295 a month needs about JMD $108,000 down. The Jamaica Post manager who missed the CS75 Pro by JMD $896 needs about JMD $75,000. Work out your own gap, divide by 1,200, multiply by 100,000. That is your deposit.

6. Ask about the 100,000 km warranty cap, with your own mileage. Tell them what you drive in a week and ask them to tell you when you hit 100,000 km. Do that sum in the showroom, not in year seven.

7. Ask which side the wheel is on, for the exact unit, or better yet, go take a look. The website will not tell you.

8. If you are looking at a Deepal, ask whether it is a range extender or a pure EV, and which charging connector it has. The S07 is the only one of the three that is purely electric.

9. Do not stretch for the next model up. The pattern on this page is that almost nobody clears a car comfortably. They clear it by a few hundred dollars a month, or they miss it by a few thousand. That is exactly the range where somebody talks themselves into it. The car one step down is the same badge, the same warranty, and the same dealer.

10. Look up your own job on this site before the test drive. If your title is not there, or the only figure for it is from one employer, add yours.

How I Calculated These Figures?

Prices came off changanjamaica.com on October 27, 2026, for all eight models on that website: the Alsvin, CS35 Plus, Uni S, CS75 Pro, Hunter, Deepal S05, Deepal S07 and Deepal G318. Every model Changan Jamaica lists carries a price, so unlike the Dongfeng article there is nothing left out for being price on request. All eight are "Starting at" prices, and that phrase is the dealer's, not mine.

The monthly payments are mine, not the dealer's. Changan Jamaica publishes no finance terms at all, on the website. I modelled with no down payment, 120 months, and 7.75% a year on the reducing balance, then rounded each payment to the nearest hundred dollars so you can reproduce the salary figure yourself by multiplying by 60.

The 7.75% is the rate I back-calculated out of Jetour Jamaica's own published monthly payments, so it is a real Jamaican franchise-dealer rate rather than an invented one. It is the same rate the Dongfeng article used, which is the point: one set of terms across three dealers means the cars can be compared with each other. The salary required is the monthly payment multiplied by 12 and divided by 0.2. Nothing else is in it. I have not modelled insurance, licensing, fitness, fuel, or depreciation, and all of those are real.

The drive-side facts come from Changan Jamaica's Instagram and my personal visit to the dealer, not from the website, because the website does not carry them.

The salaries come from the CaribSalaries database, and the year each one was reported is in brackets beside it. The year is the year the figure was earned or published, not the year it was added to the site. Three kinds of sources are here, and I have used the newest of each:

- The April 2026 central government scales, published by the Ministry of Finance and in force since 1 April 2026. All 153 grades. Where a grade is a band, I have said so and shown both ends, because the notch you sit on decides the car.

- 2026 job postings, stored at the bottom of the advertised range, because that is a number somebody is definitely paid. Where the advertisement gave a ceiling too, I have printed it. Monthly figures, such as the Housekeeper's, are annualised as 12 months, and the original is kept on the record.

- Published figures for named individuals, which sit on our Life at the Top page with their source attached.

Every salary in this article is a different role from the ones in the Dongfeng article. That is on purpose. Reusing the same six people for every dealer would make the series a single calculation run eight times. The site median of JMD $3,959,299 is the figure printed on the CaribSalaries homepage on 27 October 2026, across every role on the site, from 2,936 approved reports.

Nothing on this page is estimated or inferred from another market, with the single exception of the monthly payments, which are flagged as a model everywhere they appear.

Spread The Word

I could name a procurement administrator, a ministry HR officer, a post office manager, an aquaculture officer, and a high school principal in this article because those figures exist. I could not name a single parts manager, service advisor, car salesperson, or mechanic, because nobody has added one. Three dealer articles in, and I still cannot tell you what the people selling these cars are paid.

If your job is missing, add it: https://caribsalaries.com/submit. It takes about three minutes, it is completely anonymous, and nothing identifying ever appears on the site. And tell me in the comments section(on our social media page) which dealer you want next. I am working through every major one in Jamaica until you can look up any car on any lot and know in ten seconds whether it fits your payslip. So which one is it? The JMD $37,800 a month sedan that 118 grades out of 153 can afford on day one, or the JMD $126,000 a month flagship that a high school principal can just about reach? Tell me below.
