How Much Do You Need to Earn to Afford a Dongfeng in Jamaica?
- salaries
- dongfeng
- berts
- jamaica

Dongfeng has just landed in Jamaica, through Bert's, and the cheapest one is JMD $3,699,000. That is the lowest price in this series so far. I ran the salary numbers on the April 2026 scales, and the median Jamaican salary on this site clears four of the eight cars on the lot.
There is this amazing sign at 53 Hagley Park Road that immediately catches your eye. That sign outside says Dongfeng. Most Jamaicans have never heard the name. The sign on the building next door has said Bert's since 1988, and everybody has heard that one. That is the whole pitch, and it is a good one. The first question anybody asks about a badge they do not know is "Will I get parts?" Bert's carries about 120,000 parts lines and has done been in the game for 37 years. Question answered before it was asked馃槑.
Here is the question nobody at the counter can answer for you. Can you actually afford one?
This is the second article in this series. The first was How Much Do You Need to Earn to Afford a Dongfeng in Jamaica? Since then, the rules have been updated. I saw the feedback online and decided to reduce the ceiling to 20% of gross monthly pay, instead of 30%. The loan term is 10 years, which is what Jamaican dealers and banks are actually writing. And every salary here is the newest I hold, so nothing on this page is a figure from three years ago wearing a 2026 date.
Prices were read off dongfengja.com on October 24, 2026. Salaries are from our own database on the same day. Every salary is a year's pay, before tax, and the year it was reported is in brackets right after it.
Note Well: Dongfeng Jamaica does not publish a monthly payment on its website. Jetour does. I had to build the monthly payment myself, and I want that in bold near the top rather than buried in the method note at the bottom. Every monthly figure on this page is my model, not the dealer's offer.

Why 20% and Not 30%?
The rule is that your monthly car payment should not be more than 20% of your gross monthly pay. Gross means before any deductions. 30% is too high for Jamaica. Check a Jamaican payslip, and you will see why. Off the top comes PAYE, NIS, NHT, and education tax*. What lands in the account is well under the gross. Then the car itself keeps asking: insurance, licensing, fitness, fuel, and a set of tyres due to a bad pothole馃槓. At 30% of gross, there is close to nothing left for the car's own running costs, never mind the rest of your life(kids, emergencies, hurricanes).
*Note Well: The government plans to merge several statutory deductions into a single social contribution or tax line on payslips.
So: 20% of gross monthly pay. The arithmetic is simple, and you can run it on any dealer in Jamaica.
Calculation: monthly payment x 12, divided by 0.2.
Or quicker, because 12 divided by 0.2 is 60: multiply the monthly payment by 60, and that is the salary you need. A JMD $44,400 payment needs JMD $2,664,000 a year. The published Jetour article stays at 30%. 20% starts here and runs forward.
What Does Each Dongfeng Actually Cost?
Dongfeng Jamaica publishes a cash price and stops. No monthly, no term, no rate. So here is the model I built, and I would rather you argue with it than not see it.
Model: Nothing down. 120 months, which is 10 years. 7.75% a year on the reducing balance. Nothing down is deliberate. The figures below finance the full sticker price, because the payslip you have this month is the only thing you can check these numbers against. Put money down and every monthly payment here falls. None of
them rises. Ten years is the term, because that is what the market is writing. A reducing balance loan is one where the interest is charged on what you still owe, so it falls a little every month as the balance comes down. Stretch it over 10 years, and the monthly payment gets small enough to pass a payslip test. That is the point, and it is also the catch, so here is the catch in plain figures: the Shine GS at JMD $3,699,000 costs you about JMD $5,330,000 by the time the last payment clears. Roughly JMD $1,630,000 of that is interest. The MHero 817 costs
about JMD $18,550,000 on a JMD $12,880,000 car. Ten years is also longer than many people keep a car. If you sell at year five, you still owe, and what you owe may be more than the car is worth. Where did 7.75% come from? Not out of the air. Jetour Jamaica publishes both a price and a monthly payment on its own website, and I worked backwards from their figures to find the rate hiding inside them. It came out at about 7.75%.
So it is a real rate, charged by a real Jamaican franchise dealer, this year.
That is the best anchor I have.
Note Well: a bank's motor vehicle loan is usually dearer than a franchise dealer's own financing. Treat every monthly figure below as the optimistic end.
Eight models, cheapest first, with the salary each one demands at 20%.
| Model | Price | Monthly payment | You need to earn |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shine GS (petrol SUV) | JMD $3,699,000 | JMD $44,400 | JMD $2,664,000 |
| Mage E3 (petrol SUV) | JMD $4,699,000 | JMD $56,400 | JMD $3,384,000 |
| Box EV (electric) | JMD $4,799,000 | JMD $57,600 | JMD $3,456,000 |
| Vigo EV (electric) | JMD $5,299,000 | JMD $63,600 | JMD $3,816,000 |
| Huge E2 (petrol SUV) | JMD $5,499,000 | JMD $66,000 | JMD $3,960,000 |
| DFAC P22 (diesel pickup) | JMD $5,499,000 | JMD $66,000 | JMD $3,960,000 |
| e蟺007 (electric) | JMD $7,499,000 | JMD $90,000 | JMD $5,400,000 |
| MHero 817 (plug-in hybrid) | JMD $12,880,000 | JMD $154,600 | JMD $9,276,000 |
*These are estimated figures
The Huge E2 and the DFAC P22 are the same price to the dollar. One is a petrol family SUV, and the other is a 4x4 turbo-diesel work pickup with a 1,575 mm load bed. Same money, completely different life.
Who Can Buy The Cheapest One?
The Shine GS needs JMD $2,664,000, and here is the thing I could not say in the Jetour article.
The median Jamaican salary on this site clears it with room to spare. Across every role we hold, the median is JMD $3,959,299. The Shine GS payment is JMD $44,400 a month, and 20% of that median, monthly, is JMD $65,988. That is JMD $21,588 a month more than 'what's needed'. The middle of our Jamaican data can afford the cheapest car in this showroom, with nothing down, and still has the insurance and the tyres covered.
It is also the cheapest new car this series has priced. The cheapest Jetour on the list is JMD $3,990,000. The Shine GS undercuts it by JMD $291,000馃く. Put a real 2026 job beside it. An Assistant Archivist at the National Library of Jamaica earns JMD $2,803,771 (2026). 20% of that, monthly, is JMD $46,730 against a JMD $44,400 payment. They clear it by JMD $2,330 a month. Annualized, that's JMD $27,960. That could be used to buy a spare tyre馃.
Go one step down, and the answer changes completely. The National Fisheries Authority advertised a Records Officer with a range running from JMD $2,190,302 to JMD $2,945,713 (2026), and a Licensing and Registration Officer on exactly the same band. Hired at the base, 20% of monthly pay is JMD $36,505, and they are JMD
$7,895 a month short of the cheapest Dongfeng. At the top of the same band it is JMD $49,095, and they clear it by JMD $4,695. Same post, same authority, same car.
And then the one that stops you. The same National Library advertised an Office Attendant at JMD $18,647 a week, which is JMD $969,644 a year (2026). 20% of that is JMD $16,161 a month. The cheapest car on this page is JMD $44,400 a month. That is JMD $28,239 a month short, on a ten-year loan, with nothing left to stretch. There is no model on this page for them.
One Building, Five Salaries
Stay at the National Library for a second, because it advertised five posts in 2026 and they make the whole article in one list. Same institution, same employer, same car park.
| Post | Salary (2026) | 20% monthly | What it buys |
|---|---|---|---|
| Office Attendant | JMD $969,644 | JMD $16,161 | Nothing on this page |
| Administrative Assistant | JMD $1,439,455 | JMD $23,991 | Nothing on this page |
| Senior Library Assistant | JMD $1,711,060 | JMD $28,518 | Nothing on this page |
| Assistant Archivist | JMD $2,803,771 | JMD $46,730 | The Shine GS |
| Senior Archivist | JMD $6,333,301 | JMD $105,555 | Everything up to the e蟺007 |
Five levels of one ladder in one building. Three of them cannot finance the cheapest new car at this dealership. One of them can, barely. And one of them can walk in and buy the electric fastback that does 3.9 seconds in 100 km/h. That gap is not about Dongfeng. It is what a Jamaican pay scale looks like when you lay a price list across it.
Who Can Buy The Mage E3 And The Box EV?
These two sit almost on top of each other: JMD $3,384,000 and JMD $3,456,000. That is JMD $56,400 and JMD $57,600 a month, respectively.
A Soil Scientist at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining earns JMD $3,501,526 (2026). 20% of that, monthly, is JMD $58,359. They clear the Mage E3 by JMD $1,959 and the Box EV by JMD $759 a month.
Seven hundred and fifty-nine dollars. One insurance renewal eats that. The same figure, to the dollar, is what Jamaica Post advertised for a Senior Repairs and Maintenance Specialist (2026), and what the National Environment and Planning Agency put at the floor of its Management Accounts Officer post, which runs from JMD $3,501,526 to JMD $4,709,163 (2026). At the top of that band, 20% monthly is JMD $78,486, and both cars stop being a question at all.
Now the band that straddles the line. The Rural Agricultural Development Authority advertised an Agricultural Assistant range from JMD $2,803,771 to JMD $3,770,761 (2026). At the bottom notch, 20% monthly is JMD $46,730, which misses both cars by a clear margin and leaves them on the Shine GS. At the top notch, it is JMD $62,846, which clears the Mage E3 by JMD $6,446 and the Box EV by JMD $5,246. Same job title, same authority. One of them buys an electric car, and one of them does not, and the only difference is how long they have been doing the job.
Who Can Buy The Vigo EV?
This is the tightest line in the whole article, and I checked it twice. The Vigo EV needs JMD $3,816,000, which is JMD $63,600 a month. Take that Agricultural Assistant at the very top of their band, JMD $3,770,761.
20% monthly is JMD $62,846. They are JMD $754 a month short of the Vigo EV馃. Seven hundred and fifty-four dollars a month, at the ceiling of a band it takes a career to climb. That is the entire margin between an agricultural officer driving an electric Dongfeng and not driving one. About JMD $63,000 down closes it, which is the clearest case on this page for putting money on the counter. Who clears it outright? The site median does, by JMD $2,388 a month. So does the 2026 government scale once you reach Senior Executive Officer 1, Accountant 1, Auditor 1, or Foreign Service Officer 2, 15 grades which all run from JMD $3,676,602 to JMD $4,944,621 (2026). A band means your pay depends on how far up it you have climbed, which the scale calls a notch. At the bottom notch, 20% monthly is JMD $61,277, and the Vigo EV is still JMD $2,323 out of reach. At the top notch, it is JMD $82,410, and there is real daylight.
Who Can Buy The Huge E2 Or The P22?
Both need JMD $3,960,000, which is JMD $66,000 a month. Here is the figure I did not expect to find. The median Jamaican salary on this site is JMD $3,959,299. These two cars want JMD $3,960,000. The middle of our entire Jamaican dataset misses the most expensive petrol SUV and the work pickup at this dealership by JMD $701 a year, which is about JMD $12 a month馃槮. That is a dead heat. It is inside my own rounding. The
median Jamaican salary on this site and the salary 'needed' for a Dongfeng Huge E2, on a 10 year loan at 20% of gross, are the same number. That is the single most striking line of arithmetic it has produced.
Who clears it with room? The National Environment and Planning Agency advertised a Compliance and Enforcement Officer salary ranging from JMD $4,266,270 to JMD $5,737,659(2026). At the floor, 20% monthly is JMD $71,105, clear by JMD $5,105. The National Fisheries Authority put a Senior Aquaculture Extension Officer, a
Business Systems Analyst and a Senior HR Officer on the same band(same as the NEPA band quoted above). That is the P22's honest buyer in Jamaica. Not a contractor with a yard full of equipment. A mid-level government officer a few levels up, or somebody on the equivalent in the private sector.
Who Is Driving The e蟺007?
The e蟺007 is the interesting one. It is an electric fastback that Dongfeng quotes at 3.9 seconds to 100 km/h馃槷, 540 km on a charge, and a drag coefficient of 0.209. Drag coefficient is how cleanly a car cuts through air, and 0.209 is a genuinely low number; most family cars sit around 0.30. It needs JMD $5,400,000 a year, which is JMD $90,000 a month. A Director of Customer Service at Jamaica Post earns JMD $5,198,035 (2026). So does a Manager of Corporate Communications there, and a Supervisor of Safety and Security, and a Project and Property Manager. 20% of that is JMD $86,634 a month. They are JMD $3,366 a month short of the fastest car in the showroom. Three thousand three hundred and sixty-six dollars. A director of a national agency, on a 10 year loan, missing it by less than the cost of a tank of fuel a month. The National Fisheries Authority advertised eight separate posts on a band starting at that same JMD $5,198,035 and running to JMD $6,990,779 (2026):
Senior Aquaculture Management Officer, Fisheries Economist, Aquatic Health Specialist, Director of Farm Management and Production, and four more. At the floor of that band, they are JMD $3,366 short with the Jamaica Post director. At the ceiling, 20% monthly is JMD $116,513, and the e蟺007 is comfortable.
Two people get there outright. That Compliance and Enforcement Officer at the top of their band, JMD $5,737,659, clears it by JMD $5,628 a month. And the Senior Archivist at the National Library, on JMD $6,333,301 (2026), clears it by JMD $15,555 a month and is the most comfortable buyer of a 3.9 second car
in this entire article. A librarian in the fastest car on the lot, I like the sound of that馃榿.

The Flagship: Who Can Buy The MHero 817?
The MHero 817 is Dongfeng's flagship, the first thing on their homepage, and it is now the eighth and last row of that table. A plug-in hybrid at JMD $12,880,000, which on my model is JMD $154,600 a month and needs **JMD
$9,276,000 a year. That figure is almost two and a half times the median salary on this site. The National Fisheries Authority advertised a Captain of its Research Vessel from JMD $6,333,301 to JMD $8,517,586 (2026), and that is the highest ceiling on any single advertised post in the batch. At the very top of it, after a full career, 20% monthly is JMD $141,960. The captain is still JMD $12,640 a month short of the MHero.
To clear it on the 2026 government scale, you have to reach Senior Executive Officer 6, which runs from JMD $9,871,912 to JMD $13,276,624. At the bottom notch of that band, 20% monthly is JMD $164,532, and the MHero finally fits, by JMD $9,932. That is only 11 grades out of 153 on the scale, near the very top of Jamaican public sector pay, before this car becomes a payment rather than a fantasy. Read that
back, and it is not a criticism of the vehicle. It is what the top of a Jamaican pay scale actually buys.
Three Of These Are Electric. Should You Buy One?
Three of the eight are EVs: the Box, the Vigo and the e蟺007. This is the first dealer in this series where electric is at the cheap end of the range, so it deserves a straight answer.
The running cost case is real, and here is how to check it yourself. The Box EV has a 43.89 kWh battery and a claimed 430 km of range. That works out to about 10.2 kWh per 100 km. The petrol Shine GS uses 6.33 litres per 100 km, which Dongfeng itself prices at JMD $1,612 per 100 km at a pump price of JMD $254.68 a litre.
So for the electric car to cost the same per 100 km as the petrol one, electricity would have to cost about JMD $158 a unit. It does not. Pull out your own JPS bill, find your rate per kWh, multiply by 10.2, and compare it to
JMD $1,612. The gap is the money you keep.
The charging case needs a warning, but not the one the dealer's map gives you. Dongfeng Jamaica's own page counts 53 public charging points across ten parishes. That number is low. Evergo says it is now past 70 stations on its own, and JPS Charge 'n Go publishes somewhere around 37 plugs on top of that, which puts the island comfortably over 100. Jamaica has more charging than this dealer's website admits, and that is worth knowing before anybody talks you out of an EV.
Here is the part that actually matters, and the dealer is right about it. A plug being there is not the same as a plug fitting. Most of the Evergo network uses the American J1772 and CCS1 standard. A Dongfeng uses the European Type 2 and CCS2. Different shape, same electricity. So of everything on the island, only a minority will charge a Dongfeng without an adapter, and on the dealer's own count of that minority is 18 points, 12 of them fast chargers.
Ask for the adapter in the deal, and ask which standard it converts. That one accessory is the difference between being able to use 100+ chargers and 18.
And one thing to ask about the battery. The powertrain and battery warranty is quoted at 10 years with no mileage limit, for the first private owner who services on time with the dealer. Read that sentence carefully, because every clause in it is a condition. Miss a service, buy it second hand, or use it as a
taxi, and you may not be the person that cover is written for. It is also worth noticing that the battery cover and the loan now run the same length. Ten years of warranty, ten years of payments. The month the last payment
clears is roughly the month the cover runs out.
Is The Warranty Actually Better Than The Last One?
Worth comparing, since it is the same series and the same question.
- Dongfeng: 7 years or 300,000 km on the vehicle, 10 years with no mileage limit on the powertrain and battery, 3 years of scheduled servicing(42,000 km) included.
- Jetour: 8 years and up to 300,000 km on the vehicle, 3 years or 42,500 km of free servicing, plus free registration, fitness and window tinting on a new SUV.
Here is the thing, though, and it is the most interesting line in this article for anybody who does not care about cars at all. Jetour's warranty was not always 8 years. It used to be 6 to 7 years depending on the model. Jetour Jamaica raised it across the whole range, including the 2025, 2026, and 2027 lineups, and it did so after Dongfeng
landed. Some in the trade say the timing was no accident and that it was a direct answer to Dongfeng arriving with 7 years and a 10 year no-mileage-limit powertrain. I cannot prove motive, and I am not going to pretend I can. What I can tell you is the sequence, and the sequence is that one Chinese brand opened a showroom and within weeks the other one gave every single customer an extra year or 2 of cover馃.
That is competition, and you are the one it benefits. Three years ago neither of these warranties existed in this market at all.
On the straight comparison, Dongfeng gives up a year on the vehicle warranty and takes the stronger powertrain position, because "no mileage limit" is the unusual phrase there. A gearbox or a battery is the five or six figure surprise that ends a car's life, and that is exactly what the 10 years covers. Jetour's free servicing stops at 42,500 km, which a Kingston commuter reaches in about three years anyway. Dongfeng's three years carries no kilometre cap on the page I read.
Which Side Is The Steering Wheel On?
Do not skip this one. We drive on the left in Jamaica, and some of these cars are left-hand drive. The interior photography on the Shine GS page is captioned "left-hand drive shown" twice, and that is not a stock photo problem. The Shine GS really is left-hand drive. I checked it against Dongfeng's own Instagram.
The e蟺007 is right-hand drive, and that is the useful part, because of how the website behaves. Dongfeng Jamaica is direct about this. When a model is right-hand drive, the page says so. So the rule for checking any model yourself is simple:
If the model page does not say right-hand drive, it is not right-hand drive.
That is not a trick question for the salesperson. It is something you can settle in 30 seconds on your phone before you go in. Is a left-hand drive car a dealbreaker? No. Plenty of them run in Jamaica. But you will reach every drive-through, every toll booth and every parking ticket machine from the wrong side for the whole life of the car, overtaking on a two-lane road is harder, and it follows you to resale. Three of the six Jetours were left-hand drive too, so this is now the second dealer in this series where it comes up. Decide how you feel about it before you fall in love with a colour, not after.
Race It Down Hagley Park Road First
Here is something I did not expect to be writing in a salary article. Dongfeng Jamaica has built a racing game. It is at Race DongFeng, it is free, it runs in your phone or laptop browser with nothing to install. Also, yes, it is a race down Hagley Park Road from Half Way Tree to Three Miles, built from real map data. You pick your Dongfeng, you drift the corners to fill your nitro, and you send your friends a time to beat. You can let me know your time on social media馃殫.
I am mentioning it for two reasons. Firstly, the game is pretty fun so shout out to DongFeng!
Secondly, it is one of the coolest things on their website, and it has nothing to do with cars. It is a free way to spend ten minutes sitting in a Dongfeng before you have spoken to a salesperson, on the road you actually drive, outside the showroom that is actually on that road. Nobody is reading your body language while you do it馃ぃ. Nobody asks what colour. Go and play it. Then come back and run your own 20% number before you book the
test drive. In that order馃槒.
And the obvious thing, which their own site says too: it is a game. Hagley Park Road is not. Drive it at the speed limit. Thank You馃槓.
What Should You Actually Do With This?
1. Run your 20% number before you walk in. Gross monthly pay times 0.2 is your ceiling. Or take your annual salary and divide by 60, which gives you the same answer in one step. Write it in your notes app before you go.
2. Ask for the term and the rate in writing, because the dealer has not published them. Every monthly figure here is my model with nothing down, at 120 months at 7.75%. The dealer's real offer could be better or worse. Make them write down the term, the rate, and the total you will have paid at the end.
3. Ask for that total, and then look at it. Ten years of payments on the cheapest car here comes to about JMD $5,330,000 on a JMD $3,699,000 vehicle. If the number the dealer writes down makes you uncomfortable, the answer is a shorter term or a cheaper car, not a longer term.
4. If you do have a deposit, know exactly what it buys you. Every JMD $100,000 you put down takes about JMD $1,200 off the monthly payment at these terms. That agricultural officer who missed the Vigo EV by JMD $754 a month needs about JMD $63,000 down, and the car is theirs. Work out your own gap, divide by 1,200, multiply by 100,000. That is your deposit.
6. Do not stretch for the next model up. The pattern on this page is that almost nobody clears a car comfortably. They clear it by a few hundred dollars a month, or they miss it by a few thousand. That is exactly the range where somebody talks themselves into it. The car one step down is the same badge, the same warranty, and the same dealer.
7. Check which side the wheel is on, on the model page, before you go. If it does not say right-hand drive, it is not right-hand drive.
8. Look up your own job on this site before the test drive. If your title is not there, or the only figure for it is from one employer, add yours.
How I Calculated These Figures?
Prices came off dongfengja.com on 24 October 2026, for all eight models on this page: the Shine GS, Mage E3, Box EV, Vigo EV, Huge E2, DFAC P22, e蟺007 and the MHero 817. The ZNA Rich 6 Pro is price on request, and the Rich 7 and Z9 are on order for early 2027, so none of those three are here.
The monthly payments are mine, not the dealer's. Dongfeng Jamaica publishes a cash price and no finance terms at all. I modelled nothing down, 120 months, and 7.75% a year on the reducing balance, then rounded each payment to the nearest hundred dollars so you can reproduce the salary figure yourself by multiplying by 60. The 7.75% is the rate I back-calculated out of Jetour Jamaica's own published monthly payments, so it is a real Jamaican franchise-dealer rate rather than an invented one. The salary required is the monthly payment multiplied by 12 and divided by 0.2. Nothing else is in it. I have not modelled insurance, licensing, fitness, fuel, or
depreciation, and all of those are real.
The salaries come from the CaribSalaries database and the year each one was reported is in brackets beside it. Three kinds of sources are here, and I have used the newest of each:
- The April 2026 central government scales, published by the Ministry of Finance and in force since 1 April 2026. Where a grade is a band, I have said so and shown both ends, because the notch you sit on decides the car.
- 2026 job postings, stored at the bottom of the advertised range, because that is a number somebody is definitely paid. Where the advertisement gave a ceiling too, I have printed it. Weekly figures, such as the Office Attendant's, are annualised as 52 weeks, and the original is kept on the record.
- Published figures for named individuals, which sit on our Life at the Top page with their source attached.
The site median of JMD $3,959,299 is the figure printed on the CaribSalaries homepage on 24 October 2026, across every role on the site. One small thing I noticed while writing this and cannot unsee: that median is, to the dollar, the top notch of the Administrative Manager 4 band on the 2026 scale. With this much published government pay in the data, the middle of the distribution landing exactly on a scale notch is not really a coincidence.
Nothing on this page is estimated or inferred from another market, with the single exception of the monthly payments, which are flagged as a model everywhere they appear.

Spread The Word
I could name an Office Attendant, an Assistant Archivist, a Senior Archivist, a Soil Scientist, a records officer, a compliance officer, and a ship's captain in this article because those figures exist. I could not name a mechanic, a chef, a hotel supervisor, or a single person who works at a car dealership, because nobody has added one.
